Objectives:This study sought the factorial validity of the Korean version of the State-Trait Inventory(STAI) Form X for clinical population. For this reason, authors investigated the factor structure and internal consistency of STAI from psychiatric inpatients and outpatients.
Methods: By consecutive sampling, responses from STAI and Beck Depression Inventory were obtained from a final sample of 340 patients at a psychiatric unit of a university hospital. The initial factor structures of the State and the Trait Scales were separately analyzed using first exploratory factor analysis. Then the goodness-of-fit indices were calculated from confirmatory analysis.
Results:Two factor components ¡¯State anxiety absent¡¯ and ¡¯State anxiety present¡¯ were extracted for State scale explaining 57% of total variance. Trait Scale extracted three factor solution, ¡¯Trait anxiety and depression present¡¯, ¡¯Trait anxiety and depression absent¡¯, and ¡¯Passivity¡¯(45% of the variance). Internal consistency of STAI and factors were satisfactory. All correlations among depressive symptoms and these factors were significant(p<.001). The goodness-of-fit indices also supported the factor solution from exploratory factor analysis.
Conclusion: This study supported the factorial validity of STAI-Form X for Korean clinical population. However, cautions should be made on our finding that this anxiety scale also measures depressive symptoms.
